How did Bflat come about? How did you guys meet and what ignited this support group?

Bflat was formed as a support group for Vietnamese original musicians, songwriters, and artists. The support we give range from exchanging of song writing techniques, recording and pro audio technologies, to studio times and friendship. And most important of all, we listen. We basically started this group as a support base for our friends, but have grown larger over the years, and today expands into many directions. The concept is still promoting music freedom ...yes! But also to have fun doing it.

What is it that keeps you away from mainstream music and take this alternative route?

Actually Bflat is not keeping itself out of anything. We are first and foremost music. But our music is somewhat alternative, alternative to Vietnamese mainstream music, something different I guess. I don't really know what Vietnamese mainstream music is anyway. Is there a true Vietnamese mainstream music? Or is there something else? The main purpose of Bflat is always to support, encourage, and respect each artist's own sound and style, be it rock, country, techno, industrial, or pop. The majority of Bflat musicians will not conform or compromise any part of their works for anything, especially not to be part of a larger record label. For this reason, many Bflat musicians may choose not to be involved with other labels, afraid that there maybe a chance they have to compromise their works.

Have you had any success in introducing this type of music to the Vietnamese community?

We have not tried to introduce it to the VN community. We have mainly been focusing our attention on making our music better. We think it is more like, is the VN community ready to be introduced to this kind of freedom in music?

Do you consider yourself underground?

No not really, we are more like (again) an alternative to what is out there. I think it is alright to give the Vietnamese music community some dynamics as to what is out there. It is like dialing for radio stations, each one is a bit different from the other.

What is the key element that separates your music from mainstream?

Freedom of music style and sound.

Is Bflat's music naturally different or do you guys kind of have to steer yourself away from what considered popular in the VN community?

Are we doing that? Oops! If we do, we certainly don't mean to be that way! It is hard to say. Let's ask this question first. Is Vietnamese music mainstream like other ethnic mainstream music, which contains so many variety of styles and sounds? Consider American or any other ethnic groups, their mainstream, which you could say the stuffs play on the radio or MTV, is mainstream. You would see such a wealth of variety and sound, that is not counting the alternatives and underground scene, which is huge. How would one judge what is Vietnamese mainstream music? I don't buy the excuse that because we are Vietnamese, we have to be like this or that. In our case, we don't even have to try to be different or to steer away, each of us just be our individual self.

How much Vietnamese will your audience expect to find in your music?

Bflat is Vietnamese. Our music is Vietnamese regardless if it is written in English or Vietnamese or any other languages. Music is a form of one's own
statement. I live more than half of my life here in America, and if I express or tell a story better by using English, I will. And vice versa. Our music is written by Vietnamese musicians and artists.

What is going on with Bflat right now and what lay ahead?

Well, we just finished our charity audio book CD which was delivered to a few blind orphanages in Vietnam. Right now, we are recording and mixing for 3 separate Vietnamese bands. That won't be finished until at least the end of this year. For future projects, we are drawing out plans for our commercial
studio and rehearsal space for bands. The building process of which will start in January of next year. We are just shooting for more fun and more music.
To V Magazine,Thank you so much for giving us a chance to speak our mind. It is an honor that you spend the time to look into our world of music. Again, deep appreciations.
