V
- "Say La Vie"
was more or less a family band - tell us about the experience
of growing up with all four brothers who are all into music.
Steven Mai - Well my
brothers and I (Ricky, Moses, Linc, and my sister Dani) started
the band for family events only in 1986, it was more or less
a hobby, but then guests started asking if we'd play for their
weddings, before we knew we were playing almost every weekend,
I was the drummer of the group, I think that being in a band
made up of family members only made the family bond tronger,
oh sure like all groups we had our ups and downs, but it was
fun and we all loved it.
V -Do
you enjoy having a band and sing your own music or would you
rather be a solo artist?
Steven Mai - I'm sure
all singers would love to have a band of their own , because
when you do , there is trust, you tend to understand and learn
each others chemistry on stage, you know what, when, or if one
of the other members will do something. When singers travel
to other destinations for shows, our biggest fear is to have
bad back up band, However due the size of the Vietnamese community
, there is no way any singer could have their own back up band,
it would cost too much. So I take what I can get.
V - How
did it feel like the first time you appear in the music video
and/or in front of a large audience?
Steven Mai - If I can
remember correctly, the feeling I had when I was standing in
front of my first large crowd? Well I was in New Orleans. I
was very nervous but had such and adrenaline rush. It was great,
it's a natural high. That's what I think all singers live for,
and that's what I think we'll miss when it's gone.
V - You've
done some modeling and also appear in a few commercials - would
you rather be a model or a singer? and why?
Steven Mai - Well I used
to model when I was younger, (Im too old now) I do miss it sometimes,
but music has given birth to a new love, singing gives me new
and different ways to express feeling and emotion - I feel,
with singing - especially in Vietnamese, because I was only
one when I came to the States, it gives me a chance to understand
and to learn, about the richness of our people and our history.
V -
How much of an impact do you think
"look" has on your career as a singer?
Steven Mai - The image,
for an entertainer is one of the most important if not the most
important ingredients of his/or her career. We all know and
have to accept that even in life image is almost everything,
I feel that physical appearance is a God given gift, if youre
lucky enough to be born with it then be thankful, however image
and personal style is something all entertainers and people
have to find within themselves. So looks are good , but image
and presence is even better.
V - What
do you wish for in the future? and what are your plans in term
of advancing your music career?
Steven Mai - Well I hope
to be picked up by a bigger production, when it happens or if
it happens, great, if it doesnt happen, then I'll continue to
do my own thing. I do it for the love of music, that's when
it's the purest. I have a CD that will be released pretty soon.
And just wrapped up a couple videos for Ca Dao and Dai Truyen
Hinh VN due to be released later on this year.
V - Your
latest musical activities? Tell us all about it.
Steven Mai - Well I have
just been traveling a lot, on shows and some video shoots. Most
shows may seem really glamorous in front of the curtains, however
it's totally different scene behind curtains. It's really hard
work; long hours and long flights, and very little sleep when
I travel. To me and I think all singers will agree the most
rewarding thing about being a singer is seeing and experiencing
all the smiles and joy we witness from up stage. The feeling
I get when I am on stage makes all that all the work worth while.
V - If
you were to say one thing to reach out to your audience - what
would it be?
Steven Mai - To all me
fans, friends and family, I thank you dearly from the bottom
of my soul for supporting me and believing in me. All of your
positive support has given me the chance to do what I love and
have always dreamed of.
I want to extend a extra special thank you, to singer Trizzie
P Trinh. You are and will always be a dear friend.
And to the audience and patrons of V magazine I especially want
to thank you guys for allowing and giving me the opportunity
to share and express who I am and what I stand for as an entertainer.
I hope that you will continue to keep your hearts, minds and
ears open to music.
