
The Legislative Branch
The legislative (lej iss LAY tiv) branch is Congress: the Senate and the House of Representatives (rep ree ZEN tuh tivz). This branch makes the laws for the United States. The Congress works in the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. The members of Congress are elected by the people of this country. There are no term limits for Congress. Each senator is elected for 6 years. The leader of the Senate is the Vice President. There are 100 senators, 2 for each state.
Each representative is elected for 2 years. The leader of the House of Representatives is called the Speaker of the House. There are 435 representatives in Congress. States with more people get more representatives in the House.
The highest law in this land is our Constitution. Any changes to the Constitution are called amendments. No law can be passed that does not agree with our Constitution.
