After the Revolutionary War, America got more land and states. In many states, people owned slaves. Slaves are people that other people buy and sell. The states in the South had many slaves. The states in the North did not like this. The Northern states did not want the Southern states to have slaves. They wanted the slaves to be free. The Southern states wanted to keep their slaves. They did not want to be part of the Union. We call the United States the Union. The Southern states wanted their own country. They called it the Confederacy. In 1861, a war started between the Northern and Southern states. this was the Civil War. The Northern army was called the Union army. The Southern army was the Confederate army. The President of the United States during the Civil war was Abraham Lincoln. Abraham Lincoln signed a paper to make the slaves free. This document is called the Emancipation Proclamation. In 1865, the Northern army won the war. The Southern states came back to the Union. President Lincoln saved the Union.
