George Washington was born in Virginia on February 22, 1732. George's father, Augustine Washington, died when George was 11. When George was 16 he went to live with his older brother Lawrence at Mount Vernon. Before George joined the military he was a surveyor.
In 1759, when George was 27 years old he married Martha Custis. After George's brother Lawrence died, George and Martha went to live at Mount Vernon.
George Washington fought in the American Revolution between 1775-1783. This war was fought between the American Colonists and England. England wanted to tax the American Colonists. The American Colonists wanted to be independent from England. The Continental Congress chose George Washington to lead the colonial army. Washington became the first Commander-in-Chief.
In the end, the American Colonists won the Revolutionary War and the Constitution was written. George Washington lead the convention which helped write the U.S. Constitution in 1787. Later, Washington was elected to become the first president of the U.S. in 1789. He was elected again in 1792. During Washington's administration John Adams was his Vice President.
George Washington died on December 14th 1799 at his home at Mount Vernon. Washington was the first president of the United States. He is also called the "father of our country."
