II. Ng÷ ph¸p (grammar)

   1. The word "m×nh" (I, my) in this lesson and the word "tí" in lesson 1 are the same meaning (Tõ "m×nh" trong bµi nµy vµ tõ "tí" trong bµi 1 cïng nghÜa).

   CËu ®i ®©u ®Êy?

   §©y lµ ai?

§©y lµ bè m×nh (tí).
   This is my father.

   2. "b¸c", "chó", "cËu" mean "uncle" in English. But in Vietnamese, they are different words ("b¸c", "chó", "cËu" - cã nghÜa "uncle" trong tiÕng Anh nh­ng trong tiÕng ViÖt chóng lµ nh÷ng tõ kh¸c nhau).

   * "b¸c" is one's father's elder brother [or father's elder sister]
      ("b¸c" lµ anh [hoÆc chÞ] cña bè).
   * "chó" is one's father's younger brother ("chó" lµ em trai cña bè).
   * "cËu" is one's mother's younger brother ("cËu" lµ em trai cña mÑ).

   Bè t«i b¶y m­¬i tuæi.
   My father is seventy years old.
  
B¸c t«i b¶y l¨m tuæi.
   My uncle (father's elder brother) is seventy five.
  
Chó t«i s¸u l¨m tuæi.
   My uncle (father's younger brother) is sixty five

   MÑ t«i s¸u hai tuæi.
   My mother is sixty two.
  
CËu t«i s¸u m­¬i tuæi.
   My uncle (mother's younger brother) is sixty.

   3. Sentences which have predicative verbs are often used to express action or activity of the subject (Nh÷ng c©u cã vÞ ng÷ ®éng tõ th­êng ®­îc dïng ®Ó biÓu thÞ hµnh ®éng hoÆc ho¹t ®éng cña chñ thÓ).

   Examples (VÝ dô):

   Questions (C©u hái)

4. "ë ®©u?" means "where?" ("ë ®©u?" cã nghÜa lµ "where?")

   ChÞ lµm viÖc ë ®©u?
   Where do you work?
   T«i lµm viÖc ë Bé Gi¸o dôc.
   I work at the Ministry of Education.

   Anh häc tiÕng ViÖt ë ®©u?
   Where do you study Vietnamese?
  
T«i häc ë Tr­êng §¹i häc Quèc gia ViÖt Nam.
   I study it at the Vietnam National University.

   5. "®©u" also means "where" but it is often placed after the directional verbs such as "®i", "®Õn" (go), "vÒ" (go back), "ra" (go out), "vµo" (go in), "lªn" (go up), "xuèng" (go down)... ("®©u" còng cã nghÜa lµ "where" nh­ng nã th­êng ®i sau c¸c ®éng tõ chØ h­íng nh­ "®i", "®Õn", "vÒ", "ra", "vµo", "lªn", "xuèng",...).

6.   §©y lµ ai? = Ai ®©y?

My Family

   There six people in may family: My grandfather, my grandmother, my father, my mother, my brother and I.

   My grandparents are old. My grandfather is 80 years old. He used to be a worker at the Gia Lam Train Factory in Hanoi. My grandmother is 75 years old. She used to be a nurse at Bach Mai hospital. My grandparents retired 20 years ago.

   My father is 55 years old. He is the director of Hoa Binh automobile factory. He speaks French and Chinese very well. He travels abroad all the time. My mother is the director of the international relations department of the Ministry of Trade. She went to the National Economic University in Hanoi. My mother, my brother and I can talk to one another in English.

   My brother graduated from the Institute of International Relations seven years ago. He is working at the South East Asian department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. I am a senior student at the National University of Vietnam. I am a law student. I want to become a lawyer.

   I have a very close friend. Her name is Diem Huong. She is my classmate. She is my brother's girlfriend.
